Rice and pumpkin porridge for babies

Ingredients

  • 40g of rice (two tablespoons)
  • 100g pumpkin
  • a little bit of cinnamon
  • Breast milk or formula

How to make rice porridge with pumpkin or pumpkin

  1. Peel the pumpkin and cut it into small cubes.
  2. If you are going to use brown rice you have to rinse it and leave it to soak for 30 minutes. With normal rice it is not necessary.
  3. In a saucepan put the rice and the pumpkin and add 200ml of water. Let it cook for 25 minutes, stirring constantly. If you see that it runs out of water you can add a little more.
  4. When it is cooked, drain the ingredients a little (if there is any water left) and put them in a bowl. The pumpkin pieces should be very soft but for smaller babies you can mash them with a fork.
  5. Add some breast milk or formula, which is at room temperature, not from the fridge. Pour in enough so that the porridge is “a little wet” but not soupy.
  6. Sprinkle a little cinnamon on top and mix everything well.

Tricks and tips

  • For smaller babies or those who do not tolerate textures well, it can be crushed with the blender. But be sure to feed it warm because cooling the rice makes the mixture a bit rubbery.
  • If you don’t have pumpkin, this recipe goes great with sweet potatoes, and you can also use brown rice.
  • If your baby is over a year old you can use whole cow’s milk.
